After two albums with her jazz quartet, Elina Duni issues ”Partir” (ECM, 2018), her most intimate recording to this date, addressing the theme of love, leaving and departure. On this entirely solo album, the Tirana-born vocalist accompanies herself on piano, guitar and frame-drum, interpreting songs from diverse source – from folk song to ballads.
Here we find traditional music from Kosovo, Albania, Armenia, Macedonia, Switzerland… As well as ”Je Ne Sais Pas” by Jacques Brel, ”Meu Amor” by Alain Oulman, ”Amara Terra Mia” by Domenico Mdugno. Twelve songs sung in nine languages : Albanian, German, French, English, Italian, Portuguese, Armenian, Yiddish and Arabic.
Elina Duni’s unique and expressive voice and her clean arrangements create a common thread running through the album and make the songs come together.
On stage she also offers this repertoire with english guitarist Rob Luft. Through his colorful playing style he adds West-African as well as British folk riffs. Here he finds in Elina Duni’s voice the perfect musical partner. Together they take us on a trip where immemorial songs sound so contemporary and so true.Ohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjE3FaVvA7E
